Warm Colors Apiary is owned and operated by Bonita and Dan Conlon. Dan and Bonita raise honeybees to produce
the finest regional honey from the fields and forests of Western Massachusetts. In addition to making specialty
honeys, they also make pure beeswax candles, offer educational programs and beekeeping supplies.
A common challenge for small business owners is to keep overhead low while continuing to market, manage and
revise their products. WCA needed a robust, yet cost-effective solution that would meet their requirements not
only now, but as they continue to grow. With over 115 different products, an important requirement was the ability for Dan
to easily update and manage these products himself, without the need for hiring expensive IT personnel.
WCA turned to Mavice for their web store.
Mavice spent a good deal of time learning about WCA's needs and understanding their business. This phase
of a project is particularly important because every business is different; a one size fits all approach rarely
works when implementing business systems in different environments. Because we understood WCA's business, we were
able to develop a solution that made sense for their customers.
Mavice designed a robust database-driven web store that has become an important piece of WCA’s
overall bottom-line. The Mavice design offered WCA the following benefits:
|
|
Quickly change web content without changing any code.
Update product prices and descriptions instantly.
Add or hide products without editing HTML or modifying the shopping cart.
Enables integrated purchasing, inventory and shipping.
Ability to store and manage customer information and product preferences

WCA has now turned its site into a pleasant buying experience for customers across the country.
Founded in 1981, the American Film Market (AFM) has grown steadily to become the premiere global marketplace where all of
Hollywood's decision makers and trendsetters gather under one roof. Unlike a film festival, the AFM is a marketplace where
production and distribution deals are closed. In just eight days, more than $800 million in business deals will be sealed.

In order to facilitate these deals, AFM hired Mavice to create an online tool for exhibitors and distributors. For the first time,
AFM's online portal provided trade show exhibitors the ability to submit their film screening requests 24 hours a day,
7 days a week, and 365 days of the year. The fully integrated back office administrative tool (shown above) allows the
AFM staff to fully monitor, edit, and schedule these requests to the appropriate theaters. The administrative tool also includes
dozens of web reports and is fully integrated into their email system.
In addition, the software also includes a publicly available searchable online screening schedule. Users can browse
multiple categories such as film title, genre, language, company, or screening schedule. Furthermore, a complete listing of a
company's previously screened films at the market can be retrieved. Mavice also collaborated with Google to provide exhibitors
he ability to stream their film trailers on the site.
Designing for the Future
Mavice's creativity and technology expertise helped bring AFM's staff, exhibitors and distributors closer together then ever before.
Knowing that AFM would be looking to the future to provide an online store for individuals to purchase films this site was
designed from the start to be scalable and customizable and is currently posed to meet the future needs of AFM.

The Open Source Movement
Why all the hype about open source technology?
Each day open source technologies continue to gain mainstream acceptance and support. The hype around many
open technologies is reaching intense levels. People are starting to ask should I consider open source
as part of my business model or how can I leverage open source technology in my current infrastructure?
Open source has a number of advantages over traditional proprietary models. The top five reasons that
most companies are staying with and moving towards open source are:
|
|
Reliability
Performance
Cost
Security
Scalability
|
Sendmail and Apache are two stellar examples of very successful and highly integrated open source technologies
that are helping businesses make and save money. Building products or companies around successful open source
projects allows you to inherit a large market share and build on an existing reputation. Using and integrating
open source technology will add inherent value to your product. This value comes from the continuously evolving functionality
developed by a pre-existing user base.
In the ever emerging markets, the advantages associated with utilizing open source technology far
outweigh the path of aggressive competition for market share. It can be seen time and time again in
today's economy, as a product reaches the saturation point, the fight for market share turns fierce.
This is where open source changes everything. Technologies built around open source can undermine competitors
by making the core pieces of the technology a commodity. You can then simply sell your technological edge or
service as a value added product to the core technology.
Another large advantage of working in and with open source is that open source does not rely on closed API’s.
The result is that open source projects are heavily involved with creating and integrating with standards which
in turn allows open source technology to be extremely flexible with a high degree of coexistence capability
with other products. Open source projects also spend a lot of time and effort encouraging the development community
to come up with improvements and new features to software. These new features can propel your product to find additional
sources of revenue.
The future of open source looks very bright. Market share in the areas of open source web services, database,
and storage infrastructure solutions continues to grow at a furious rate. With major companies such as
Novell and IBM putting increased financial and human resources into there open source solutions, the possibilities
are endless.

Web 2.0
More than just a buzzword
The term Web 2.0 was the result of a brainstorming session between Tim O'Reilly and
Medialive International. Web 2.0 is not about technical specifications but is a
blending of various technologies and principles that have survived the dot-com bubble to provide
a richer experience for end-users. Web 2.0 is fundamentally based on the idea of using
the web as a platform for application development.
While many people still consider Web 2.0
to be a marketing buzzword, the Web 2.0 principles are catching on and are not going away
anytime soon. For example, the idea of not designing a web application for a single device
but for various devices such as PC's and handhelds or the idea of perpetual beta software in which
you continue to add small changes frequently instead of in bulk or the concept that data is
king, and if you can create a unique data source you will add value to your application. These are such a few of the principles of Web 2.0 which do not just produce a quality piece of software but can be
valuable business practices to retain your competitive edge in the market.
Mavice is currently heavily involved in numerious Web 2.0 projects ranging
from its independent film search engine at
InspiredTalent.net
to its project status tool that is being developed for Intel® which is a Web 2.0
application built from the ground up.

Mavice Recommendation Engine featured in IEEE Magazine
15 May 2006, Santa Monica, California
Mavice had the privilege to be one of a handful of exemplary and leading-edge technology
companies developing recommendation solutions that was featured in the May 2006 article
of IEEE Computer. While other systems require extensive customer input prior to
accurately suggesting content, the Mavice solution delivers on-demand
recommendations instantaneously. With this approach, there are no user-privacy issues,
or the need for an expensive infrastructure to handle customer history.

Most consumers who have used Amazon.com or other major e-commerce Web sites are accustomed
to receiving recommendations for a book, music CD, DVD, or article of clothing they might
be interested in buying.
Initially, recommendation technology was relatively crude. It basically
just recommended products like other items the buyer had purchased. However, the technology has become
considerably more sophisticated and is now an essential part of many online retailers’ economic models.
The approach uses complex algorithms to analyze large volumes of data and determine what products
that potential consumers might want to buy based on their stated preferences, online shopping choices, and
the purchases of people with similar tastes or demographics. It is creating new revenue opportunities and increasing
both customer retention and the number of shoppers who become buyers.
Major recommendation-technology vendors include AgentArts, ChoiceStream, ExpertMaker, Google, and Mavice. Big users include
Amazon.com, Apple Computer, and the Netflix DVD-rental Web site.
